MEDIA AND WOMEN’S SELF-IMAGE This paper will discuss the view that the media generally has a negative impact on the self-image of women. The evidence to support this view has been provided by the arguments of women writers and the findings of empirical studies over the years. Media representations present an ideal for female appearance and behavior. Women, especially those who are young and impressionable, accept this seemingly authoritative ideal and develop a negative self-image when their own bodies fail to match it. The problem is that the media ideal is unrealistic. Women of color are given the message that they are not light-skinned enough and women of all types are given the message that they are not thin enough. This paper will describe the problem and will argue that the best way to overcome it is to increase women’s awareness that they are being manipulated by the media for the sake of increased profits. Concerns with the influence of the media on self-image among women can be seen as early as the late eighteenth century, in the work of Mary Wollstonecraft. Specifically, in chapter five of A Vindication of the Rights of Women, Wollstonecraft criticized writers of the time who were guilty of treating women as â€Å"objects of pity, bordering on contempt.† For example, Jean-Jacques Rousseau argued that the natural role of women was to be â€Å"weak and passive† and subject to men (Wollstonecraft 99). As long as history has been recorded of mankind, man has fought relentlessly for power. This â€Å"power† can come in many different forms: power through knowledge, power of survival, power over one’s fellow men, and even power over the forces of nature. One such example of a power that man has long sought to uncover is the secret to manipulating time and achieving immortality. In the 19th century, Edgar Allan Poe made an excellent example of this struggle in his short story â€Å"The Masque of the Red Death†. While a deadly plague is ravaging his country, a prosperous prince, quite appropriately named Prospero, takes a thousand of his fellow elites into seclusion at an abbey, where he later holds an elaborate masquerade. It is then towards the end of this masque, held in an imperial suite of brilliantly colored but bizarre rooms, that the plague, known as the ‘Red Death’, finally makes its way into the abbey, inevitably killing all of its inhabitant s before the night is over. In â€Å"The Masque of the Red Death† , Poe utilizes symbolism in the rooms, their colors, and a great ebony clock to convey the theme of ‘Man versus Nature’, through man’s struggle to overcome the laws of time and defeat death. A vast majority of citizens believe that if gun control is strictly enforced it would quickly reduce the threat of crime. Many innocent people feel they have the right to bear arms for protection, or even for the pleasure of hunting. These people are penalized for protecting their lives, or even for enjoying a common, innocent sport. To enforce gun control throughout the nation, means violating a persons Constitutional rights. Although some people feel that the issue of gun control will limit crime, the issue should not exist due to the fact that guns are necessary for self defense against crime, and by enforcing gun control is violating a citizens second amendment right to bear arms. Guns are evil to some, because of the violence that they create. People express guns as weapons of homicide. They insist that, the more guns with which our society equips itself, the greater the likelihood for accidents or violent acts involving fire arms to occur. It is a proven fact that handguns have been the murder weapon of choice. Guns are involved in half of all homicide cases. People believe that society has relied on weapons that create harm and criminals. Therefore, these weapons should be outlawed. However, law abiding citizens have the right to protect themselves against danger. Due to the ownership of guns, burglaries have reduced considerably. A gun is a tool, guns don't kill people.
